I went to see my mother yesterday and endured a time of reflection on the way brought on by a song and by watching a 70’s TV programme earlier that morning. I suppose having lots of time to think opens the mind to allsorts, things that most folk don’t have time for because they are stuck at work, behind a desk ,a counter or behind machinery in a factory. Whilst this can be good in a free thinking way, it can give you issues with self worth and with your overall place in the world, as despite numerous attempts in the recent past I don’t bring in a wage.
Take me home, Country roads for those who don’t know is a song by the late John Denver, which did the rounds in the early 1970’s and was always played on BBC Radio 1 (in the UK)for over a decade after its release. The lyrics centre on home, in this case being in Virginia, but it ask the question “Where is Home ? ” is it where you live ? or is it where you were born ? or even where you lived as a child ?
Another classic song rallies that “A house is not a home” so what does make somewhere home ? Personally I’ve come to the conclusion that ‘memories’ make a house a home and memories also make the place where you live or lived home too.
In ones memory the sun always seems to shine, you’ve forgotten nearly all the bad times and those memories are almost endless when you think about home. In these times where peoples lives are fuelled by endless cravings for money its easy to forget the most rewarding things in life. Its not what you own or the things you want, its the natural things that are around and the people you meet on the way. It is this feeling that gives you richness in life a richness money just cannot buy.
I’m 51 now and firmly believe that the memories gained along the way have brought me a satisfaction that’s unique but also leaves very little space for recriminations or regrets. Yes I do have dreams, dreams of a house in the country, a garden, even more sunshine even with all these things will it be home ?
I suppose in the end…..Home is where the heart is !
