Spellbound by Emily Bronte c 1837
The night is darkening round me,
The wild winds coldly blow;
But a tyrant spell has bound me
And I cannot, cannot go.
The giant trees are bending
Their bare boughs weighed with snow.
And the storm is fast descending,
And yet I cannot go.
Clouds beyond clouds above me,
Wastes beyond wastes below;
But nothing drear can move me;
I will not, cannot go.
Many people hate winter for different reasons but apart from the way the cold and damp effect my body and the aches and pains i get,I have come to like it a lot more than I once did. I’ve come to see that through photography that it gives more chance for photo opportunities and also that some of the time its not particularly cold so it does give us brief chances to go naked again. Winter is the coldest season of the year in polar and temperate climates and is between mid November and March in the U.K. and is a time of varying pleasantries for different people.
Winter is caused by the axis of the Earth in that hemisphere being oriented away from the sun. Different cultures define different dates as the start of winter, and some use a definition based on weather. When it is winter in the Northern Hemisphere, it is summer in the Southern Hemisphere, and vice versa. In many regions, winter is associated with snow and freezing temperatures. The amount of heat energy received at any location on the globe is a direct effect of sun angle on climate, as the angle at which sunlight strikes the Earth varies by location, time of day, and season due to the Earth’s orbit around the Sun and the Earth’s rotation around its tilted axis. Seasonal change in the angle of sunlight, caused by the tilt of the Earth’s axis, is the basic mechanism that results in warmer weather in summer than in winter.Change in day length is another factor.
Suhrud Bilolikar also from the UK says :
“I would say the majority do hate winter, while a minority love it” he goes on to say ; “To me winter is the most depressing part of the year. It’s cold so you can’t do much outdoors stuff and it gets dark early so that adds to the whole depression factor. On top of that you have to go through the whole hassle of wearing coats, scarves, de-icing cars, clearing snow, shoveling driveways. Sometimes I seriously wish humans had evolved a need to hibernate for 6 months like other mammals. I swear if it wasn’t for Christmas winter would be a hell of a lot more depressing than it actually is.On the bright side I think we need winter to make us appreciate how awesome summer is. Without winter I wouldn’t have summer to look forward to. But yeah, give me a job in Florida any day and I’ll move in a heartbeat.”
