Virgin Garden – Virgin Gardeners
So it’s year one in gardening terms, our first garden our first plants I’m excited but definitely prepared for disappointment. I say this a bit tongue in cheek but I’ve read up, so hopefully I’m fast tracking when it comes to the knowledge. To be frank I’m tempted to crank up things on this post and spend ages making it seem cool… however my way is spontaneity, my way is to go full on when inspired..but after a bottle of wine or two now is not the right time.
Later the next day !
I’ve been out in the garden for most of today with the sun out I opted to finally get to work on the lawn edges, that once or twice a year job that’s can be a right pain. I opted to used a heavy duty pair of scissors two weeders and a bucket and spent the best part of three hours painstakingly cutting all the weeds and the long grass out. Afterwards I cut the lawn and swept up all the moss and the dead leaves. I am pleased yeah,of course it still rustic looking but when you’re renting you can’t really dig it all up and spend a fortune replacing things.
As you can see from the photos it’s getting there hopefully it won’t take me ages in future tidying things up. I’ve still some work to do on the quality of the grass on the lawn and must get rid of the weeds, moss, dandelions and clover of which there is lots. I’ve plenty of lawn chemicals and feed but at the moment I just need to plan out what I’m going to do.I think the best thing to do too is to buy a spreader so I can spread the chemicals evenly.
I did go on a groundsman course many years ago,so I know a little bit about it but there’s nothing like regular practice. To start with, feed the lawn with an application of spring lawn feed in April. The best feeds contain some long-lasting nitrogen fertiliser which will help.Mid-Spring is the best time for applying a weed killer or weed and feed but get rid of the dead weeds is important. If moss is a problem, use a good brand of lawn sand and rake up the dead moss a fortnight later.
In the summer mow to the normal summer cutting height once or twice a week if possible. If weeds or moss have survived the spring weed treatment, apply again in July. If only a few persistent weeds have survived, treat those weeds with a ‘spot’ treatment. If dry weather is prolonged, water the lawn well. A good soaking once or twice is far better than frequent light watering. I’ve now got the spreader all I need now is the good weather to return.
